Ludum Dare 31

Entire Game on One Screen

Entry Build

I finished the final build for this Ludum Dare! YAY !

There are still some things missing that would have been nice to have, but it’s enough for me. Maybe there will be updates in the future. We’ll see.

The new version can be found here again.

Changes since the last build

It is now possible to hire and fire crew members, there’s music and (one) sound and all the crew members have a class now, which gives them improvement in different situations. And finally I’ve made some improvements to the UI and many other small things.

Classes

  • Cook: reduces the food consumption of the crew members by 10%
  • Engineer: reduces the energy consumption while traveling between planets by 10%
  • Trader: increases the selling price by 10% and decrease the buying price by 10% for all goods

More than one crew member of a class on the ship doesn’t add extra percents.

First Test Build

I created a first build of “Captain’s Retirement” for everyone to test, Hurray! you can find it here

The build includes interplanetary traveling and a trading system, so you can start to make money for your life after your captain career.

Feel free to give feedback! You can find my contact data on my website.

Have fun exploring the solar system ;)

Bugs, missing features and other nasty stuff

  • you have to reload the page if you want to start again
  • mouseOut events aren’t triggered when the button gets hidden, so there might be tooltips visible when they shouldn’t and some other visual bugs
  • Crew is still pretty useless

Now that I have a first version to hand in, I will start adding some extra features, like:

  • Classes for the Crew (An Engineer reduces the energy consumption, a Trader gets better prices for goods, a Cook reduces the food consumption, etc)
  • Jobs to earn money on the different planets (Not sure how this should look like)
  • Hire and Fire your Crew

Edit

O M G I completely forgot the sound :/ I will try to add some background music created by the Autotracker.py script and maybe some sound effects with the BFXR

Day One is over for me

I made it through the first day of the Jam, yeah! This is what I’ve got so far: Day One result

I have a generated solar system, a living crew, meaning they need food and water to live, the crew is getting paid and all of them are aging. I can accelerate the time (really useful for interplanetary travelling) and thanks to the map, I know where I am in the system.

I’ve also created the basics, like a sliced sprite, for tooltips and more or less dynamic buttons on the bottom.

Plans for tomorrow

  1. travelling between planets (almost everything is prepared for this)
  2. contracts (to earn some money from the colonists)
  3. trading (to earn even more money and be sure that the crew won’t starve)
  4. crew skills (every ship needs its specialists)
  5. crew management (hire and fire)

And some UI improvements at the very end ;)

Screen layout

I created a rough layout for the one screen available. Including a ship deck plan, a crew list on the right, and some space for additional information and interaction on the bottom.

screen layout

The bottom menu will be used for the star map on the right, status information, like current money, captain’s age and ship status, in the middle and maybe some kind of communicator menu on the left. I am not sure how to use the space on the bottom left, but some kind of button menu should be useful.

The ship contains a big cargo room in the middle, some crew quarters on the top and bottom, an engine room on the right, bathrooms next to the engine room, a community room to left of the cargo room, officer’s and captain’s quarter behind the cockpit and the cockpit on the very left. The cargo room is bigger than it looks like on the plan, because it’s at the bottom of the ship, underneath the other rooms.
